Thanksgiving had been a huge success, Dean thought the next day. They made way too much food but they enjoyed it and laughed and all in all, it had been a great day. He had agonized on whether or not to share with Abby his conversation with Maya regarding getting married, but in the end, it had been the right thing to do.
And in typical Abby form, she didnât seem the least bit shocked by it.
He just wasnât sure if he was relieved or not.
Hell, if he were honest, heâd admit that life would be a lot less stressful and complicated if he were married. There would be someone beside him to navigate this whole new phase with Maya. Someone who would share his fears and anxiety with. Someone who would understand that being thrown into the role of parenting was overwhelming and finally, someone who would tell him that it was all going to be all right and that it was normal to screw up once in a while.
You already have that someone.
Youâre just not married to her.
Okay, so there was that.
âSo not the time,â he murmured as he walked down the hall to Mayaâs room. She was packing up for her sleepover and they were running a little behind. âHey, kiddo! You ready?â
âYup!â She ran past him with her sleeping bag and a backpack full of toys. Dean picked up her little suitcase and turned off the light in her room before following her to the front door.
âDo you have everything?â
âUh-huh!â
âLetâs go,â he said with a smile. Within minutes, they were in the car and heading down the road.
âAre we really going to go and get a Christmas tree tomorrow?â Maya asked with wonder.
âWe sure are,â he replied, smiling at her in the rear-view mirror.
âAnd Iâm going to get to pick out my own decorations?â
âThatâs right!â
âAnd Abbyâs going to come with us?â
This had been the pattern. Even after heâd explained that he and Abby werenât getting married, Maya found a way to bring Abbyâs name into just about every conversation. âShe is. She needs to get her tree this weekend too.â
âHow come?â
âBecause next week starts the long rehearsals for the Christmas play so she wonât have a lot of extra time.â He paused. âYou know sheâs going to be very busy for the next few weeks. So we have to be respectful of that so she can work and help all of her students get ready for the recital.â
âIâm going to be in the recital too!â Maya said. âAnd next week I get to try on my costume and get it fitted.â
âIâd ask if youâre excited about it, but I can already tell that you are,â Dean teased her and laughed when she started to giggle.
âAbby said that I have to remember to wear it only for the special rehearsals and for the recital and not when Iâm at home,â she said seriously. âBut after the recital is done, I can wear it whenever I want.â
Dean wasnât sure if he was actually supposed to respond to that, so he opted to stay quiet.
